New technologies
can erase the national borders around communication. Personal interactions
with those outside one's country can build understanding. Accra
& Chicago were good choices for the 2005 Ananse Project pilot
program because Chicago has a strong Ghanaian population and America
is a major investor in Ghana.Yet the differences in technology use
and access in these two places exemplify our world's Digital Divide.
The
Digital Divide
In Ghana:
only 1
in 9,000 people access the Internet
3 in 1,000
people own a computer
In the United States there are:
600 in 1,000 people accessing the Internet
more Internet service providers than any other country
more personal computers than the next 7 countries combined
